Shades:  This impeccably woven Yorkshire 100% Wool Twill showcases the MacEwan Muted Tartan, a classic tartan with a palette inspired by nature and heritage, evoking the quiet strength of Argyll’s landscape: the deep teal waters, dark evergreens, and the glow of hearthlight (gold and red) within stone homes by the loch.
A background of muted spruce green-blue alternates with calm Loch Blue, while black anchors and contrasts the pattern, lending depth and continuity to the ancient sett. Overchecks of heritage gold and Highland red add the final flourish.

Design: Woven in a traditional twill weave, this design pays homage to the MacEwans’ origins around Loch Fyne and Otter, where sea meets spruce-covered hills. The tartan balances cool aquatic tones with grounded forest hues, highlighted by heritage overchecks symbolising loyalty and legacy.

Overall: Calm, dignified, and timeless. This classic muted tartan wool twill is hard-wearing and versatile, suitable for everything from formal kilts and jackets to scarves, crafts, and interiors such as upholstery or throws.
After all, tartan is timeless and plaid is not a fad!

Properties:

Texture: MacEwan Muted Tartan is a closely woven, all-wool worsted fabric with a versatile medium/light weight. It offers the look and character of traditional wool while being softer and more comfortable against the skin.

Handle: A stable, closely woven fabric that is hard-wearing and made to last. Perfect for structured pleats and tailored details.

Drape: In addition to holding crisp details, this fabric drapes with a reassuring weight, ideal for bias cuts, flares, and flounced designs. The tartan sett can be cleverly used to create striking focal points in bespoke garments and creative pieces.

Garment Suggestions:

Why choose wool fabric?

Benefits of sewing with Wool! 🐑

We love wonderful wool! Why? Because it looks beautiful, well yes but did you know wool has a series of superpowers that make it the most incredible natural fibre, suitable for more garment suggestions and sewing inspiration than possibly any other?

Wool has a unique naturally crimped 3D structure which attributes to some brilliant properties & makes it a great fabric to wear throughout all the seasons.

Naturally Breathable: This amazing 3D crimped structure promotes air circulation allowing air to pass through the fabric, allowing for circulation and ventilation for your skin to breathe, keeping you cool.

Shower Resistant: Sheep naturally produce a waxy substance called lanolin. As sheep live outdoors, this naturally occurring wax helps to protect sheep from the elements, naturally shedding water & keeping them dry. This same property is retained within the wool fibres when spun into yarn.

Moisture Absorbing: The moisture-retentive superpowers of wool! It’s hydrophilic core gives wool the ability to wick away moisture keeping you dry and comfortable – this possibly one of our favourite properties because you can stay fresh when wearing wool, from autumn right through to spring!
