What is Tartan fabric?
The term ‘Tartan’ refers to a distinctive woven design most strongly associated with Scotland and Scottish heritage. While often described more generally as “plaid,” true tartan is defined by its carefully balanced crisscrossing horizontal and vertical bands of colour, woven to create a symmetrical, repeating sett pattern. Each combination of colours and stripe widths forms a unique identity, with many designs historically linked to clans, regions, and institutions.
Our 11oz Woven Wool Tartans
Woven in the UK from first-quality worsted wool yarns, these tartans have a smooth handle, clear pattern definition, and beautiful drape. The worsted spinning process aligns the fibres before spinning, producing a refined surface and enhanced durability, ideal for garments that combine structure with movement.
At Fabworks, we carefully source our wool fabrics from trusted British mills known for their weaving expertise and commitment to quality. Our focus is on authenticity, longevity, and craftsmanship, selecting cloths that reflect the rich textile heritage of the UK while offering dependable performance for modern makers. By working closely with established suppliers, we ensure consistent standards in fibre quality, weave clarity, and finishing.

Proudly Woven in the UK
A Legacy on the Loom
Our 11oz wool tartans are woven here in the UK by one of the country’s most respected, family-rooted mills, a weaving house whose expertise has been shaped over generations. This is cloth produced not by mass manufacture, but by skilled hands and watchful eyes, in mills where the rhythm of the looms is part of a living tradition.
Many of the families behind these fabrics have devoted decades to the craft of weaving. Knowledge is passed down, refined and protected, ensuring every length of tartan carries with it a depth of understanding that simply cannot be rushed or replicated. It is this continuity that gives the cloth its integrity: balanced construction, beautifully defined setts, and a finish that feels considered and assured.
At Fabworks, we value long-standing relationships built on trust. We work closely with established UK mills who share our commitment to quality, provenance and responsible production. These partnerships allow us to source fabrics with confidence, knowing they are woven with care, consistency and respect for Britain’s enduring textile heritage.
When you choose our tartans, you are selecting more than a fabric. You are investing in generations of skill, quiet pride in workmanship, and the reassurance of cloth woven within a tradition that continues to thrive on UK soil.

Caring for your Tartan Wool
Care at a glance: Dry clean recommended. Wool Tartans rarely need frequent washing and are easily refreshed by airing between wears or with gentle steaming. If you plan to dry clean the finished garment, dry cleaning the fabric prior to sewing is advised.
