Overview:

This collection of medium-weight tartan twill fabrics, woven in Yorkshire from pure wool, represents the very best in British textile craftsmanship. Once reserved for princes and aristocracy, these iconic checks and bold colour combinations carry centuries of tradition. Reimagined by visionary designers such as Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen, tartan has since taken on new identities, moving from heritage to high fashion, and from exclusivity to everyday wear.

Colour:

Shades: This Flower of Scotland Tartan features a base of Scottish blue, echoing the Saltire (St Andrew’s Cross), strong blocks of Spruce green, referencing Scotland’s landscape, accentuated with grounding overchecks of black and colourful pops of orange.

Unlike ancient clan tartans, Flower of Scotland is a modern tartan created in the late 20th century. It is not associated with a specific clan but rather with Scottish national identity.

Design: This twill woven Tartan takes its name from the unofficial Scottish national anthem, “Flower of Scotland,” written by Roy Williamson of The Corries in the 1960s. The song commemorates the 1314 Battle of Bannockburn and celebrates Scottish resilience and independence.

It is considered a universal tartan, meaning it may be worn by anyone regardless of surname or heritage.

Overall: The overall effect is patriotic, bold, and distinctly Scottish, with a brighter and more nationalistic tone than many traditional clan tartans.

Properties:

Texture: A closely woven, all-wool worsted fabric with a versatile medium-weight. It offers the look and character of traditional wool while being softer and more comfortable against the skin.

Handle: A stable, closely woven fabric that is hard-wearing and made to last. Perfect for structured pleats and tailored details.

Drape: In addition to holding crisp details, this fabric drapes with a reassuring weight, ideal for bias cuts, flares, and flounced designs. The tartan sett can be cleverly used to create striking focal points in bespoke garments and creative pieces.

Garment Suggestions:

Types: Perfect for clothing worn at sporting events, rugby internationals, football matches, Commonwealth Games, and national team appearances. This design is particularly popular among supporters attending matches where “Flower of Scotland” is sung.

Create a wide range of apparel from classic separates, trousers, skirts, pinafore dresses, tunics, blazers, to stand-alone pieces from ballgowns to everyday utilitarian styles with a heritage twist. Naturally, it is also perfect for traditional Scottish attire such as kilts, scarves, and ties.

Patterns: Consider patterns such as the Cordelia Trousers, the Rambler Pants, the Lynsey Dungarees, the Osborn Dungarees for trousers and dungarees or the Amelia Skirt, the Arya Pleat Dress, The Blazer or the Scoop Pinafore.

Other Uses:

Accessories: Complete your outfits with matching accessories, think ties, scrunchies and matching handbags. We love The Frame Bag pattern!

Furnishings: Perfect for a tweedy highlands scheme, create cosy soft furnishings such as cushion covers, boxed-edge seat pads, blind trims and draught excluders or use to upholster and upcycle furniture.

Upcycling: Ideal for scrap-friendly projects like appliqué, patchwork or textile art. Offcuts can be transformed into contrast panels for garments, or used to create characterful soft furnishings, think fabric trays, coasters, or classic pieces like Scottie dogs, teddy bears and dachshund draught excluders

Why choose wool fabric?

Benefits of sewing with Wool! 🐑

We love wonderful wool! Why? Because it looks beautiful, well yes but did you know wool has a series of superpowers that make it the most incredible natural fibre, suitable for more garment suggestions and sewing inspiration than possibly any other?

Wool has a unique naturally crimped 3D structure which attributes to some brilliant properties & makes it a great fabric to wear throughout all the seasons.

Naturally Breathable: This amazing 3D crimped structure promotes air circulation allowing air to pass through the fabric, allowing for circulation and ventilation for your skin to breathe, keeping you cool.

Shower Resistant: Sheep naturally produce a waxy substance called lanolin. As sheep live outdoors, this naturally occurring wax helps to protect sheep from the elements, naturally shedding water & keeping them dry. This same property is retained within the wool fibres when spun into yarn.

Moisture Absorbing: The moisture-retentive superpowers of wool! It’s hydrophilic core gives wool the ability to wick away moisture keeping you dry and comfortable – this possibly one of our favourite properties because you can stay fresh when wearing wool, from autumn right through to spring!
