Overview:

Charcoal Charm: a proper 100% wool duffle coat, delightfully comforting and traditional; extremely thick and strong with a reliable, versatile charm. It's historic, and rare these days to find such a fabric that is so evocative of past times, when you had nothing else to wear to keep you warm outside during winter.

Specifications:

Weight: Heavy

GSM: 679

Composition: 100% Wool

Width: 150cm / 59inch

Colour:

Overall: A classic charcoal, a rugged duffle coat fabric that could easily be styled into something more. A hard-working neutral shade that pairs with everything, from denim and cream to camel, rust and mustard.

Shades: Melange yarns of black and silvery grey, spun together so the charcoal shifts gently across the cloth, with the silvery grey lifting the black.

Design: A felted duffle, so no obvious weave is visible. A heavily milled finish gives it its density and weight.

Bonus - no pattern repeat, so there is no matching to worry about.

Properties:

Texture: A semi-soft yet resilient texture when handled, approximately 4 to 5mm thick, making it extremely dense, thornproof and protective.

Handle: Extremely closely woven, Charcoal Charm won't fray, so edges can be left raw or bound and seams need no lining. We often forget how waterproof wool is, with its natural water resistance and warm temperature regulation. No wonder sheep wear it all the time.

Drape: Extremely heavyweight, so it will only drape at lengths over two metres. Expect structure rather than flow: this is a cloth that holds its line and keeps you warm.

Garment Suggestions:

Types: Ideal for heavy overcoats, unlined duffle coats, donkey-style jackets, worker jackets and gilets, or styled into an edgy bomber jacket with structured details.

Top tip! At this thickness, grade seam allowances, clip corners and use a walking foot. Bound or raw edges save bulk and suit the duffle coat look.

Patterns:

Other Uses:

Accessories: Sturdy messenger bags, shopping bags, tote bags and slippers that make the most of its density and structure.

Furnishings: Hard-wearing throws, floor cushions and draught excluders: bind or leave the edges raw and let the dense Melton do the rest.

Upcycling: Rework off-cuts into elbow patches, pocket flaps, collar facings, covered buttons and coasters, with no finishing needed on small pieces.
