Overview:
Brown & Grey Check is a wool and silk blend, traditional, fine, worsted suiting. The classic check is understated and cleverly put together, with a self-assured style and plenty of interest if you look closely.
Specifications:
Weight: Light
GSM: 148
Composition: Wool & Silk
Width: 156cm / 61.4inch
Width pattern repeat: 5cm / 1.9inch
Length pattern repeat: 5.5cm / 2.1inch
Colour:
Overall: A superb nature palette, redolent of heathland dotted with bilberries: a soft, faded neutral ground with fine coloured lines, so it pairs easily with navy, cream, chocolate or a plain wine-red.
Shades: The base is a palette of faded, bark-like grey beiges, where the fine fibres appear like tiny little flecks throughout. Accent overchecks run in intersecting horizontals and verticals of classic navy, a lighter warm hazel brown and a deep, almost blood-wine coloured yarn.
Design: A classic all-over checked design of pencil-line windowpanes over broader base checks, in a classic, close, fine weave. The check is small, at 5cm by 5.5cm, so matching is easy, but allow a little extra fabric to line it up across the centre front and pockets.
Properties:
Texture: The silk yarn gives this fabric its supersoft feel. As soon as you touch it, you know that this is a special cloth. It feels very distinctive, soft and comfortable to the hand, and a delight to wear against the skin. A semi-matt finish and a subtle lustre enhance it, but the silk content makes it exceptional and you just know that you could find it in the dark by feel alone.
Handle: A classic worsted weight and hand, as for high-end worsteds. Silken yet stable, Brown & Grey Check holds a clean line as you cut and sew, and takes a crisp press.
Drape: Silken and drapey, and it will hold pleats, so it gives both movement and structure to trousers, skirts and softly tailored pieces.
Garment Suggestions:
Types: Uses as for superfine silken worsteds: tailored trousers and skirts, pleated skirts, unlined summer-weight jackets and waistcoats, shirt dresses and lightweight suiting, light enough for year-round wear.
Top tip! Worsteds this fine show every pin and seam, so use a fine needle and press with a cloth to protect the lustre.
2nd Top tip! It's too good to wear every day, even though you might want to, allow it a day to rest after wearing it on a smart day out.
Patterns:
- Pattern Stash - the perfect place to start
- Sewing Patterns for Lightweight Wools & Cashmere

Other Uses:
Accessories: Fine scarves, ties, pocket squares and lightweight wraps that show off the drape and the heritage check.
Furnishings: Too fine for upholstery, but lovely for lightweight cushion covers and lined lampshades with a country-house feel.
Upcycling: Rework remnants into waistcoat backs, jacket linings, collar and cuff facings, covered buttons and pocket linings.
