Introduction:

Some fabrics may just seem plain and ordinary BUT chosen in classic colours and natural fibres are always a valuable addition to your fabric stash. This Classic Navy is one of those fabrics.

Colour:

The name Classic Navy says it all, this is a rich dark blue, perfect for those who find black a little harsh, and always looks supersmart!

Properties:

Classic Navy is super soft, light as a feather, but not as light as voile. The superfine gauge cotton yarns which created this fabric are woven in a flat semi-translucent weave and have produced a soft malleable and drapey fabric which is also stable width and length-wise.

Garment Suggestions:

This fabric is perfectly suited for all manner of full-gathered styles. Use as a stand-alone fabric where the light translucence is the key feature. Navy fabrics never date and feminine floaty elegance always has a place in fashion cycles. The recent re-fashioning of '70s style prairie/ buffet dresses and blouses is a trend which doesn't seem to be losing popularity. Folk styles, and bohemian styles, however, one chooses to refer to them, these elegant and dreamy styles are the perfect styles for creating using this light and airy breathable. The Megan Nielsen Protea Collection Pattern is the ideal example.

This versatile fabric will look beautiful embellished with colourful folk-style embroidery or appliques (light interfacing is recommended under these areas). Classic Navy will also make practical lightweight linings or undergarments such as underskirts and under-slips for other sheer fabrics - crepe de chine and chiffons and for use as historical garments or traditional costumes. Think German and Austrian style dirndl skirts!

Pure and simple

This is indeed the softest of cotton poplins, and I picked it as the lining for a Fabworks linen skirt ( a roll piece I bought late last summer), where I did not want a shiny lining but something very light and natural. I think it would also make very comfortable loose fitting nightwear for hot summer nights as it is so light and yet also cosy in feel. I consider this one a bargain. It is slightly translucent so perhaps not for a dress unless layered.
