Introduction:
This innovative fabric is similar to straight-line pre-pleated fabrics, only Noir Undulations Pre-Pleat is formed into the most pleasing undulations. This delightful and clever fabric summons up theatrical costumes, inspired by Zandra Rhodes' designs, for icons such as Freddie Mercury, Marc Bolan and Kate Bush. But worry not, if theatrical and Outre Style is not for you we have many other classic ideas for you to fashion using this fab fabric.
Colour:
Classic black and ever so versatile. Used as a stand-alone fabric or team up with its white sister fabric Blanc Undulations for fabulous colour blocking. Alternatively, use it as an accent alongside our flat crepes.
Properties:
The textured pre-pleats of this fabric are created within a polyester crepe-like base fabric that has a matte finish. For the rhythmically undulating horizontal rows ie for traditionally vertical pleats you will need to use the width as the length, this allows for a maximum length of 152cm minus hems).
The depth of the pleated undulation is 3mm and creates a generous relaxed ease. This fabric has slight ease across the width (horizontally) and approximately 90% ease vertically, pulling the pleats out almost flat.
Garment Suggestions:
Create the most stylish artistic creations from this clever fabric. Look at the I Am Patterns - Cleopatre Dress & Top, this simple top has a stabilised yoke collar detail where the sleeveless body of the dress falls elegantly in its pleats. The use of a plain crepe will make the collar detail perfect.
The simplicity of this design can easily be translated into 1930s slip dress styles with the characteristic swishy drape of that iconic era. For similar historic style inspiration, Folkwear Patterns are an excellent resource.
For other great ideas consider creating a classic blouse/shirt with a twist in the style of Alberta Ferretti 2019 Ready to Wear - this particularly inspiring shirt had wonderful raglan sleeves and was pleated into a structured collar, cuffs and button band! For a quick make, try a simple two-piece back and front Dolman-sleeved top, with a bound slashed neck it will look superb and is so easy to make.
Create an uber-feminine style such as the Sew Different - Darjeeling Frock. Why not try cutting the frill from a continuous strip with the pleats running vertically?
Fashion students and budding fashion designers & costumiers will love creating conceptual garments from this clever fabric look to the king of pleats, Issey Miyake, for inspiration.
