Introduction:

Highland Retreat this first-rate all-wool tweed fabric has a wonderfully rich and warming colour palette which evokes thoughts of grand country hotels with mellow aged wooden furnishings, evergreen and berry floral arrangements and roaring open fires.

Highland Retreat has a traditional country appeal which can be easily incorporated into quirky Brit-style designs that are just as popular now as they were when fabrics like this were first manufactured and popularised.

Colour:

Highland Retreat the warming autumnal palette in this first-rate country tweed would not look out of place in any Highland retreat from a palatial palace to a traditional country hotel. Perfect for town or country this first-rate, all-wool tweed is just stunning.

A rich and autumnal melange yarn sits in the warp of the weave, where all the colours of the forest floor can be seen from earthy green and brown to pops of russet and gold. Vertical lines of berry red are woven at 6cm intervals to form the verticals of the windowpane check.

Dark melange navy yarns create the contrast and set the classic herringbone design alongside the autumnal warp. The warmest magenta purple yarn the colour of (Beauty berries - Callicarpa) is woven at intervals of 8cm on the horizontal to complete the window pane check.

Properties:

Highland Retreat is a closely woven woollen fabric. It has a versatile medium/heavyweight and traditional wool feel that boasts a stable handle that drapes reassuringly with the promise of cosy warmth. It’s the perfect fabric for a plethora of sewing room projects and it will always do as it’s told. Wool of this kind is easy to sew and will stand the test of time.

Garment Suggestions:

Traditional wool tweeds really are classics and the British country style we all know and love so well is universally admired.  Create your own winning style by making key pieces to mix and match with all the other classics in your wardrobe and of course all your staple navy and even denim pieces.

Start with a classic waistcoat like Jemima Waistcoat this semi-fitted ladies' waistcoat is so versatile. Gents look at classic cuts like the pattern in Vanessa Mooncie's book The Gentleman's Wardrobe when you are feeling more confident there are various other projects from a wallet, flat cap and traditional jacket in this excellent book. Great for a Peaky Blinders style.

Emphasise the classic style of Highland Retreat and create a selection of wearable styles from neat pencil skirts, simple A-line skirts and neat pinafore dresses. The Pattern Stash - Amelia Skirt sits perfectly with The Jemima Waistcoat and is a classic and wearable cut. Add a simple poncho-style cape, or for more experienced sewists create a classic cape ideal for hiding under in the dreary colder days of winter.

Other Uses:

Create the smartest accessories from neck warmers, scarves, hats and caps to messenger bags. The Frame Bag - from Hole House Patterns is a satisfying make with a professional finish.

Freshen up your home and use this hard-wearing wool plaid to create a range of coordinating soft furnishings such as cushions, throws, blinds and curtains for a truly harmonious styling in the home.

Why choose wool fabric?

Benefits of sewing with Wool! 🐑

We love wonderful wool! Why? Because it looks beautiful, well yes but did you know wool has a series of superpowers that make it the most incredible natural fibre, suitable for more garment suggestions and sewing inspiration than possibly any other?

Wool has a unique naturally crimped 3D structure which attributes to some brilliant properties & makes it a great fabric to wear throughout all the seasons.

Naturally Breathable: This amazing 3D crimped structure promotes air circulation allowing air to pass through the fabric, allowing for circulation and ventilation for your skin to breathe, keeping you cool.

Shower Resistant: Sheep naturally produce a waxy substance called lanolin. As sheep live outdoors, this naturally occurring wax helps to protect sheep from the elements, naturally shedding water & keeping them dry. This same property is retained within the wool fibres when spun into yarn.

Moisture Absorbing: The moisture-retentive superpowers of wool! It’s hydrophilic core gives wool the ability to wick away moisture keeping you dry and comfortable – this possibly one of our favourite properties because you can stay fresh when wearing wool, from autumn right through to spring!
