Mill Soot is a superb all wool brushed melton fabric, from the Valley Mist collection, one of our very special exclusive Heart of Huddersfield wools.

Woven from a plain natural white yarn, felted, dyed and finished to this this classic black, epitomising the soot stained mills of the Holme Valley. This first-rate Yorkshire melton is inspired by how the landscape was forever changing, often clothed in a smog from the mills.

This closely woven and felted 100% wool has a versatile heavy weight, featuring a traditional wool feel with a pronounced brushed surface. Boasting a stable handle with a reassuring drape, Mill Soot is perfect for keeping the elements out, as wool is naturally weatherproof! This skilfully crafted fabric will do as it’s told. Our Yorkshire Meltons are easy to sew and will stand the test of time.

Dressmakers, Reenactors, Costumiers, Interior Designers, Craftspeople and all lovers of textiles will find a plethora of uses for this brushed Melton.

Dressmakers; this fabric is ideal for fashioning classic outerwear pieces and hard-wearing separates, these meltons will keep you especially warm and dry. Gilets and waistcoats are a great place to start. Choose a complimentary lining and create garments that will become perennial favourites. Once your sewing skills are more established, try classic jackets, coats and capes for a more rewarding project. This hard-wearing felted wool is ideal for field jackets and country style clothing too, as well as classic pea coats, duffle coats and oversized statement pieces.

Reenactors and Costumiers; take delight from the strong black within this 100% wool that is just perfect for creating hard-wearing outerwear. A traditional rugged woollen that will suit a variety of modern and historical styles.

Interior Designers; a wool featuring that typical rugged look will help you to create a range of cosy but quirky nature-toned soft furnishings. Cushions and throws will all look subtle yet striking in the home with that reassuring comfort factor that wool tends to invoke.

Craftspeople; appliquéd cushions, bag making, door stops, draught excluders, hats, caps, neck warmers, mittens & wrist-warmers, throws & blankets and much more. Whatever this fabric inspires you to do!

The Perfect Fit; having put the whole collection together and tested out colour and weave combinations, we suggest using Mill Soot - Yorkshire Melton with absolutely any other woollen that takes your fancy! Brighten it up with Pink Geraniums – Yorkshire Melton or any of the other plain Yorkshire Melton fabrics for classic colour blocking styles.

Itchy feeling

Not soft, a bit hard feel. Thinner than I expected for a coat.

Why choose wool fabric? Benefits of sewing with Wool! 🐑

We love wonderful wool! Why? Because it looks beautiful, well yes but did you know wool has a series of superpowers that make it the most incredible natural fibre, suitable for more garment suggestions and sewing inspiration than possibly any other?

Wool has a unique naturally crimped 3D structure which attributes to some brilliant properties & makes it a great fabric to wear throughout all the seasons.

Naturally Breathable: This amazing 3D crimped structure promotes air circulation allowing air to pass through the fabric, allowing for circulation and ventilation for your skin to breathe, keeping you cool.

Shower Resistant: Sheep naturally produce a waxy substance called lanolin. As sheep live outdoors, this naturally occurring wax helps to protect sheep from the elements, naturally shedding water & keeping them dry. This same property is retained within the wool fibres when spun into yarn.

Moisture Absorbing: The moisture-retentive superpowers of wool! It’s hydrophilic core gives wool the ability to wick away moisture keeping you dry and comfortable – this possibly one of our favourite properties because you can stay fresh when wearing wool, from autumn right through to spring!
