What is Heart of Huddersfield?
If you’ve never come across Heart of Huddersfield before, you’re in for something really special. This is Fabworks’ pride and joy, our own way of keeping Huddersfield’s amazing textile heritage alive while giving makers like you fabrics that are fresh, exciting, and unique. We don’t just sell these fabrics, we create the designs, work with local mills to weave them, and then bring them straight to you.
Huddersfield has been the beating heart of the British wool industry for centuries, blessed with upland pastures of sturdy sheep, fast flowing streams and rivers to provide water for the tall-chimneyed mills. Most of all it has nurtured generations of weavers whose knowledge of yarn came to be almost hereditary and who could turn fleece into fabric that lasts a lifetime. This is the ancestry of our Heart of Huddersfield fabrics. When you run your hand across a length of HoH cloth, you’re not just feeling wool, you’re touching history, heritage, and a whole lot of passion from the people who made it happen.
Every year we launch a brand new collection, and once it’s gone, it’s gone. No repeats, no reruns, like releasing a limited-edition work of art in fabric form. That means if you make a coat, a jacket, a skirt, or even a throw for your sofa, no one else will ever have quite the same thing. Your make will always be unique, tied to that one chapter of the HoH story.
And here’s the real reason HoH was developed - for years, there has been a plentiful supply of surplus and deadstock wool fabrics, and while the quality can be incredible, the colours tend to be limited to endless rolls of greys, browns, and dull blues; safe ‘suit colours’, practical, sure, but lacking any spark or personality. We knew wool could be so much more vibrant, more joyful, more inspiring. So instead of hoping something brighter might just turn up, we decided to create our own fabrics, ones full of colour, character, and life. That’s how Heart of Huddersfield started: out of a determination to put excitement back into wool, to make fabrics that made people smile as soon as they saw them.
Believe us when we say that we get ridiculously excited about planning each chapter. Past collections have taken us in all sorts of directions: jewel-bright meltons that glowed like stained glass, bold block checks that felt as rhythmic as the looms themselves, and herringbones that whispered of leisurely countryside strolls. This year’s launch, Delicious Delights, is all about pure lambswool plains, in colours so bright and joyful you’ll want to eat them up. Think sugared almonds, berry sorbets, spun sugar… fabrics that shimmer with a silky sheen and drape like a dream. Honestly, we can’t wait to see what people make with them.
But here’s something that makes HoH even more special: it’s rooted in sustainability. We’re not about fast fashion or throwaway trends. A lot of our fabrics are woven from surplus or “rescued” yarns, materials that would otherwise sit gathering dust or end up wasted. By giving those yarns a second life, we create cloth that’s not only gorgeous but also kinder to the planet. And because everything is woven right here in Huddersfield, just a stone’s throw from our mill shop, transport miles are tiny compared to fabrics shipped halfway around the world. Add to that the fact these are 100% natural wool fabrics, biodegradable, durable, almost endlessly repairable, and you’ve got something you can feel genuinely good about using.
The best part? These fabrics are a joy to sew with. Makers tell us how beautifully they handle: they press into crisp edges, respond so well to shaping, and reward every bit of care you put into them. They’ve got substance without being stiff, drape without being flimsy, and a natural glow that makes any finished garment look like it belongs in a boutique. Whether you’re constructing a sharply tailored jacket, whipping up a sweeping winter cape, or even a cushion for your living room, HoH fabrics give your projects that “extra something” you just can’t fake.
For us, Heart of Huddersfield is more than a fabric range. It’s a love letter to Yorkshire’s textile past, our promise to keep local weaving alive, and our invitation to makers everywhere to be part of the story. Every time we cut into a new bolt of pure Yorkshire tweed, we get that same buzz: the colours, the textures, the possibilities. And we’d love for you to experience that too.
So, if you’re looking for cloth that’s beautiful, sustainable, full of heritage, and made with a whole lot of heart - you’ve found it. This is fabric you can make memories with, fabric that stands the test of time, fabric that has a story woven right through it. Why not take a look, see what speaks to you, and imagine the possibilities waiting to be created?

Where is Huddersfield?
This illustrated map, “Wool in the United Kingdom,” shows where woollen textiles originate from. The white highlighted area is West Yorkshire — known as the Heavy Woollen District. For hundreds of years, towns like Dewsbury, Batley, and Huddersfield have been famous for making strong wool fabrics, blankets, and carpets. While the map also points out different sheep breeds and other regions, its main story is how West Yorkshire became, and still remains, the centre of Britain’s wool industry.
