Introducing Thistledown Marl:

Thistledown Marl, is the second collection of fabrics from our Fabworks’ exclusive Heart of Huddersfield bespoke wool fabric range. A gorgeous, semi-solid, bespoke woollen fabric made up ‘ere int’ mills by Yorkshire folk!

With its name taken from the soft fluffy seed heads of thistles, Thistledown Marl has an almost feathery appearance; featuring a lightly textured and fluffy handle that is not at all dense or stiff. Thistledown Marl is like a demi-bouclé. The fabric itself has a flat weave, woven using a combination of fine multi-tonal yarns; of light and dark grey on both the warp and weft. This creates a subtle yet noticeable grey marled undertone. The weft has an additional bouclé yarn, adding characteristic curls to both the face and reverse sides and helping to create a lovely brushed and tufted feel. These tiny tufts and slubs are not the sort to catch and pull, either. Pretty and still practical!

Designed to coordinate and complement previous Heart of Huddersfield wools, Thistledown Marl also uses a marled yarn (just like 2019’s HOH: HerringbonesMarled Meltons & Birdseyes) giving unique subtle marl detailing for a quirky and bespoke look. When it comes to sewing, there are a whole host of fabulous suggestions for teaming Thistledown Marl with other coordinating HoH wools. See our Thistledown Marl Overview page for all the info!

Colour Detailing:

Sweet and pure, like a fresh batch of homemade bread dough waiting to rise in a cosy cottage kitchen. There is a gentle style to the cool and calming tones of Sweet Dough. A palette of multi-tonal marled grey yarns sit alongside the fine cream boucle yarn, featuring a very subtle flesh pink tone, which creates this sweet creamy-beige hue.

An ideal alternative to plain cream, Sweet Dough will add a chic and subtle warmth with its gentle flesh-pink undertones.

Coordinating Colours:

We like to refer to Sweet Dough as a semi-neutral shade; fantastic for dictating your overall style. Dress it up or dress it down; emphasise striking warm-toned colours or keep it cool with soft delicate pastel shades.

Team Sweet Dough with Yorkshire Sunset, Lavender Sachet and Coastal Walk for the sweetest pastel palette with a natural heathered effect that is absolutely perfect for taking you from the cold A/W into fresh spring months. These gentle and warming hues are ideal for those who have cool-toned hair.

Properties:

A reassuring and cosy medium-heavy drape quality makes this woollen ideal for a wardrobe full of practical garments. Thistledown Marl is a closely woven, mediumweight, all wool fabric and of course, it has a super stable handle with a natural ease across the bias. Use for unstructured styles such as cardis & coatigans, unlined capes, and loose pullovers. If you are on the hunt for a semi structured number peruse the jacket, waistcoat, coat, skirt, and dress pattern recommendations, and for some very selfish sewing there is even a special handbag pattern stocked & supplied by Fabworks, as well as plenty of other accessory recommendations too. Is it too early to start making Christmas presents yet?

Versatile Fabric

I stitched the Rumana Coat By Hand London with this wool coating. The fabric stitched and pressed well, and the color is a versatile combination of cool beige and gray. This is a terrific investment piece that will work in my wardrobe hopefully for many years. As a side note, I fell in love with the Senate of Griffins lining and used that in this coat. Even my husband commented that the lining was cool!
