A basic step by step guide on how to make a two sided woollen throw using fabrics. Great DIY presents that you can customise as much as you like. Free access.

Making A Double Sided Cosy Woollen Throw

We still have a couple more cold winter months to endure, so if you're feeling the chills and need a project to create simple but cosy throws, here it is .........
There's no difficult stitching when making a double sided throw, but there is some maths, and I always like to check (twice) before committing to stitching, because unpicking a 2m length through mohair or other longer pile fabric isn't fun.

About:

Fabworks brings you a new Fabric of The Month every month. This month we're featuring a superb fabric that’s ideal for getting ahead with your festive party outfits and it's available in three colourways.

Meet the PERFECT PAISLEY JACQUARD.

Was: £10

NOW: £6 per metre

Designer fabric at it's best, the superb jacquard woven (56% wool & 44% acrylic) blend oozes class. With a silky sateen background which showcases the matte paisley motifs beautifully, it's soft, drapey and lightly textured. This small collection of Italian-woven designer fabrics are stable width and lengthwise and will make stunning statement pieces like smart tuxedo styles, blazer style jackets, trousers and pants - slim fit/cigar style & capri pants, neat pencil skirts, sheath/slip dresses, evening gowns and smart occasion wear dresses, as well as fitted bodice skater style or longer skirted '50s style, drapey tulip style skirts & dresses and much more!

Sapphire - Perfect Paisley Jacquard Midnight - Perfect Paisley Jacquard Darkest Teal - Perfect Paisley Jacquard

Now it may be quite hard to tell the difference between each fabric just from looking at the photos, take our word for it, you won't be disappointed with any of the three. With an equally serviceable reverse side due to the high quality jacquard weave, you can choose your colour with confidence and use the reverse to style small extra quirks that will give your garment that designer finish and look.

Extra Special:

To make things extra special we’ve teamed up with Laura Casey at Sew Different to give you the opportunity to purchase a stylish Sew Different dress pattern - The Tie Belt Dress to use with the fantastic Perfect Paisley Jacquard. We think this fab dress pattern looks stunning when made up and crafted our own dress to show you what you too can create. You can buy this Sew Different pattern at Fabworks Online and Fabworks Mill Shop, and you'll have everything ready to get to work on your latest make!

You don’t have to purchase the pattern and fabric together as we know there are so many other fantastic patterns out there too that equally perfect for creating stunning ensembles.

  • The Great British Sewing Bee Book – From Stitch to Style has a brilliant pattern for a Chinese style top with frog fasteners that we think this will make a super dress if you extend the length and add a side zip. For more ideas and inspiration read the detailed descriptions attached to each product, online (link here)
  • If you're looking for something a little different that will make an excellent Christmas present for the gentleman in your life, Perfect Paisley Jacquard will make a suave and sophisticated smoking jacket style robe or Japanese kimono. Vanessa Mooncie’s book – The Gentleman’s Wardrobe (Vintage Style Projects for The Modern Man) has an excellent pattern for such a project
  • This super smart and stylish fabric is a great alternative to black. Create your own Little Black Dress with a difference, whilst getting your festive outfit, fit for all those office parties and other special occasions, made well in advance

Our Maker's Thoughts:

Jane - Fabworks Mill Shop staff, textile artist and experienced sewist, volunteered to be our maker for this month's Fabric of The Month. Here are her thoughts on the fabric & pattern.

The Sew Different Tie Dress pattern has been on my radar for a while and I felt like it was calling me, this one could be interesting…
What better way to try it out than to use thew Fabworks’ November FoTM. This was the second pattern by Sew Different that I’ve tried recently, the first of which was the Geo Dress (a new release that I was allowed to test, ahead of the Frocktails event on Sat. Nov. 3rd), which I made up using a funky geometric scuba. The purpose of trying the Tie Belt Dress was that we were looking for a suitable pattern to use for the the Fabric of The Month Perfect Paisley Jacquard. Killing two birds with one stone I got to try out the pattern (it’s very easy by the way) and also get my hands on the beautiful silky paisley number. The difficulty rating is * (1 star), something of a doddle. A useful feature that I did find, only after examining the fabric was that I didn’t have to add contrasting fabric for the belt or sleeves, as the reverse of the Perfect Paisley Jacquard lends itself perfectly to contrast detail as it’s reversible!
As the fabric is a wool mix it has a luxurious, smart feel and look to it. But like any lightweight wool or suiting type material it needs an appropriate finishing stitch using a sewing machine or it will fray. The finished garment is complimentary, classy with a little bit of sassy thrown in too! As with the other Sew Different pattern that I recently tried, I can recommend the them as they are to draft from, the instructions are clear and the make talks for itself.

The Overlocker Diaries #2

I am starting to regard my Elna overlocker as an aid rather than a challenge, and can see how using it will become another stage in my dressmaking with many types of fabric. Having begun by trying it out on scraps and then the fabric edges of the Ash Linen and Cotton culottes I made, I am moving forward...
