Colour:

Shades: A brighter, more historically inspired palette of light blue, leaf‑green, and black. Ancient palettes use lighter, softer colour formulations, intended to evoke the vegetable‑dye tones of older Highland weaving traditions, while keeping the original tartan structure intact.
Traditional Black Watch colours originate from dark navy, deep green and black, historically used for camouflage by Highland companies and later by the regiment itself. The Ancient variant simply lightens these tones to produce a softer, more historically evocative look.

Design: A classic Black Watch sett, built from broad green blocks intersected with blue bands and framed by black overchecks. The sett itself is unchanged from the regiment’s historic pattern, known as the Government tartan, which has been in documented use since the 18th century.
In the Ancient colourway, the geometry remains identical, but the colour palette shifts to lighter blues and greens characteristic of the ancient style, giving the pattern a fresher and more traditional Highland appearance.

Overall: Bright, heritage‑focused, and classically Scottish. Black Watch Ancient keeps the deep historical significance of the Black Watch, long associated with Highland companies, military distinction, and widespread cultural recognition, but expresses it through a softer, more traditional palette. The result is a versatile tartan suited to garments that aim to balance authenticity with a lighter, more approachable colour profile.

11oz Tartan Properties

Texture: A closely woven, all-wool worsted fabric with a versatile light weight. It offers the look and character of traditional wool while being softer and more comfortable against the skin.

Handle: A stable, closely woven fabric that is hard-wearing and made to last. Perfect for structured pleats and tailored details.

Drape: In addition to holding crisp details, this fabric drapes with a reassuring weight, ideal for bias cuts, flares, and flounced designs. The tartan sett can be cleverly used to create striking focal points in bespoke garments and creative pieces.

Scottish Kilt Sewing Pattern

A sewing pattern with instructions for creating a complete set of Scottish traditional attire, including pattern pieces for the jacket, men’s vest, women’s knitted vest, and knitted socks. The kilt, however, is made differently from the other garments.

A traditional kilt isn’t cut from pattern pieces but instead shaped and constructed directly from the tartan’s woven setts (the design woven into the fabric), this sewing pattern provides clear, detailed guidance on how to pleat and construct the kilt using the fabric itself.

The result is an authentic, beautifully structured kilt created the traditional way - guided by the weave, rather than paper templates.
