Creativity & Inspiration

Working with Tartan

Tartan may seem daunting, but it is a wonderful and very versatile fabric, offering sharp lines for perfect pleats in classic clothing, or for extravagant even outrageous Vivienne Westwood-inspired styles.

The 310GSM / 11oz weight is perfect for traditional kilting, jackets, trousers, shift dresses, capes, and smart heritage-inspired separates. The smooth worsted finish gives a natural resilience and durability, and an elegant appearance suitable for both clothing and décor.

Besides statement garments, tartan is a wonderful fabric for accessorising, whether adding cuffs and peplums, or creating simple separates such as sashes, scarves and ties, as well as bags, berets and handicraft projects.

Tartan is also a great choice for home décor. Create a Highland-inspired aesthetic with cosy soft furnishings: curtains, cushions, draught excluders, trimmings and other homewares.

Folkwear Patterns

Scottish Kilt Sewing Pattern

A sewing pattern with instructions for creating a complete set of Scottish traditional attire, including pattern pieces for the jacket, men’s vest, women’s knitted vest, and knitted socks. The kilt, however, is made differently from the other garments.

A traditional kilt isn’t cut from pattern pieces but instead shaped and constructed directly from the tartan’s woven setts (the design woven into the fabric), this sewing pattern provides clear, detailed guidance on how to pleat and construct the kilt using the fabric itself.

The result is an authentic, beautifully structured kilt created the traditional way - guided by the weave, rather than paper templates.

Frequently Asked Questions

The term tartan refers to a distinctive woven pattern most closely associated with Scotland and its textile heritage. While sometimes described more generally as 'plaid', true tartan is defined by its balanced arrangement of horizontal and vertical bands of colour, woven to form a symmetrical, repeating pattern or design (sett). Each combination of colours and stripe proportions create a unique design, many of which have long‑standing connections to clans, regions, families, or institutions.

Yes. Fabworks stocks 103 tartans that fall into 4 recognised designs (setts): Modern, Ancient, Muted and Miniature. These titles refer to the colour palettes or the scale of the pattern, not differences in fabric quality.

The tartans in this range are the same weight and are woven from the same worsted yarns, so while the designs vary, the fabric itself stays consistent.

'11oz' refers to the weight of the physical fabric. With a 310GSM (grams per square metre) which is the same as 11ounces of weight. This is considered a lightweight worsted wool, which has been woven using 100% pure wool worsted yarn and produces a cloth that is light in handle yet still durable & stable, suitable for a wide range of garments.

“Worsted” refers to a smooth, tightly woven wool fabric that’s commonly used for suiting. Unlike fluffier, textured wools or traditional tweeds, worsted fabric is made from long, combed fine wool fibres, which give it a clean, sleek finish making for a strong and durable fabric. With a beautiful drape, it feels refined, and holds its shape well, making it ideal for structured and tailored garments like suits, skirts, and formal kilts.
