Overview:
This collection of medium-weight tartan twill fabrics, woven in Yorkshire from pure wool, represents the very best in British textile craftsmanship. Reimagined by visionary designers such as Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen, tartan has since taken on new identities, moving from heritage to high fashion, and from exclusivity to everyday wear.

Colour:
Shades: This iconic Royal Stewart Tartan is best identified by its bold Regal red background, intersected by borders and fine stripes to form a rectangular grid of spruce green representing the Scottish landscape, sky blue for loyalty and truth, golden yellow for Royalty, wealth and prestige, and accents of white for peace and honesty and black.
Design: A closely woven twill fabric woven using multi coloured warp and weft yarns to form the Tartan design.
Style: Its bold colours and symmetrical pattern have made it a favourite in punk fashion, especially in the 1970s and 1980s, where it was used as a symbol of rebellion, ironically contrasting its Royal origins. You don't have to be rebellious or Regal to wear this iconic tartan fabric. Its uplifting, multicoloured palette has such versatility and can be used as a statement piece or alongside any of its colour ingredients, or for accessories.
Properties:
Texture: Royal Stewart Tartan is a closely woven, all-wool worsted fabric with a versatile medium/light weight. It offers the look and character of traditional wool while being softer and more comfortable against the skin.
Handle: A stable, closely woven fabric that is hard-wearing and made to last. Perfect for structured pleats and tailored details.
Drape: In addition to holding crisp details, this fabric drapes with a reassuring weight, ideal for bias cuts, flares, and flounced designs. The tartan sett can be cleverly used to create striking focal points in bespoke garments and creative pieces.

Benefits of sewing with Wool! 🐑
We love wonderful wool! Why? Because it looks beautiful, well yes but did you know wool has a series of superpowers that make it the most incredible natural fibre, suitable for more garment suggestions and sewing inspiration than possibly any other?
Wool has a unique naturally crimped 3D structure which attributes to some brilliant properties & makes it a great fabric to wear throughout all the seasons.
Naturally Breathable: This amazing 3D crimped structure promotes air circulation allowing air to pass through the fabric, allowing for circulation and ventilation for your skin to breathe, keeping you cool.
Shower Resistant: Sheep naturally produce a waxy substance called lanolin. As sheep live outdoors, this naturally occurring wax helps to protect sheep from the elements, naturally shedding water & keeping them dry. This same property is retained within the wool fibres when spun into yarn.
Moisture Absorbing: The moisture-retentive superpowers of wool! It’s hydrophilic core gives wool the ability to wick away moisture keeping you dry and comfortable – this possibly one of our favourite properties because you can stay fresh when wearing wool, from autumn right through to spring!
