This first-rate Italian, medium/heavyweight wool fabric was originally woven for a prominent British fashion Designer, destined to become classic outerwear for sharp dressed men and women about town. Create your own bespoke pieces for a fraction of the price you would pay for a designer item on the high street.
Man About Town is an intricately woven, high thread count fabric woven with a melange yarn of plum and black tones throughout the weft, alongside black and fine white yarns on the warp. The soft mixture of yarns is woven into a classic district check with an accent yarn of navy intersecting the design and adding a subtle accent of teal and khaki green too.
This super soft, dense fabric boasts a lightly brushed finish (akin to a heavyweight flannel), with a medium/heavyweight and reassuringly soft & heavy drape quality. This type of woollen fabric is stable and strong and will stay put whilst in construction.
Man About Town will make excellent sports jackets, pea coats, classic Epson coats and overcoats. For super smart but equally stylish ladies coats create styles with fitted bodices and flared skirts, add some navy velvet to the collar and pocket tops for an authentic equestrian style. Classic blazers and hacking style jackets will look equally smart with velvet accents, add some interesting buttons to give your creation unique style. If tailored jackets and coats are a little advanced for your sewing skills then start with simple poncho style wraps, personalise with printed linings and feature chunky buttons. There are a plethora of simple coat patterns for beginners and intermediate makers, take a look at:

- Closet Case: Sienna Maker Jacket
- Paper Cut: Sapporo Coat
- Friday Pattern Company: Ilford Jacket
If garment making isn't for you, this sturdy and stable wool fabric will make excellent soft furnishings; cushions, throws, blinds and curtains.
Benefits of sewing with Wool! 🐑
We love wonderful wool! Why? Because it looks beautiful, well yes but did you know wool has a series of superpowers that make it the most incredible natural fibre, suitable for more garment suggestions and sewing inspiration than possibly any other?
Wool has a unique naturally crimped 3D structure which attributes to some brilliant properties & makes it a great fabric to wear throughout all the seasons.
Naturally Breathable: This amazing 3D crimped structure promotes air circulation allowing air to pass through the fabric, allowing for circulation and ventilation for your skin to breathe, keeping you cool.
Shower Resistant: Sheep naturally produce a waxy substance called lanolin. As sheep live outdoors, this naturally occurring wax helps to protect sheep from the elements, naturally shedding water & keeping them dry. This same property is retained within the wool fibres when spun into yarn.
Moisture Absorbing: The moisture-retentive superpowers of wool! It’s hydrophilic core gives wool the ability to wick away moisture keeping you dry and comfortable – this possibly one of our favourite properties because you can stay fresh when wearing wool, from autumn right through to spring!
