Composition: Linen & Cotton

Width: 148cm / 58.3inch

Colour:

This beautiful European, Linen & Cotton fabric is woven (not printed) with alternating horizontal stripes of natural ecru/ cream and soft smoke grey. Riviera Awning evokes images of chic coastal cafe-bars with shade giving elegant awnings where beautiful people meet for lunch on the Riviera. This simple but delightful combination produces an artisan-like aesthetic that has a versatile style perfect for everything from elegant, breathable clothing to crafts and soft furnishing.

Properties:

Weave consists of flat, closely woven cream-ecru, finely slubbed (4.4cm) horizontal stripes alternating with raised edge (1cm) stripes of soft smoke grey. Sturdy, strong but soft and malleable, will create feminine pleats and gathers, yet drape reassuringly. The close weave produces good opacity.

NB: The design is horizontal, therefore, consideration is needed when using the fabric vertically. Lengths of a maximum of 164cm, less hems and other allowances
Garment Suggestions:

Use this, linen-blend fabric to create all those go-to garments sure to become perennial favourites in your wardrobe.

Wide-legged trousers, The Cordelia Trousers and matching blazers. Utility jackets, A-line dresses and skirts, pinafore dresses, popover pinafores and shark bite tunics are all pieces with drape and will create comfortable, breathable pieces perfect for teaming with simple linen tops made in our Linen & Cottons.

Other Uses:

Create matching accessories, hats, caps etc.

Try simple, blinds, cafe curtains, and tab-top curtains (maximum length limited to the width of the fabric if vertical stripes are required).

About Linen

Linen not only offers ‘cool chic’ looks, but also comfort, durability, and sustainability, and is an exceptional fabric to wear throughout spring and summer months. It comes in weights from super light and floaty, through ‘shirt crisp’ to softly draping skirt and trouser weight, which can even find a place in the seasonal transition wardrobe. Derived from the flax plant, linen is celebrated for its breathability and moisture-wicking properties, ensuring you stay cool and dry during warmer months. Its natural fibres allow for excellent air circulation, making garments feel light and comfortable even on the hottest days.

One of the standout features of linen is its durability. The fabric's inherent strength resists abrasion and pilling, ensuring that your garments maintain their beauty over time. Additionally, linen will soften with each wash, enhancing comfort without compromising its robust nature. This makes linen ideal for creating timeless wardrobe staples, such as trousers, tunics, shirts and dresses.

Linen's hypoallergenic and antibacterial qualities make it suitable for individuals with sensitive skin or allergies. Its natural resistance to bacteria ensures garments remain fresh.

From an environmental perspective, linen is a sustainable choice. Flax cultivation requires minimal water and pesticides, and every part of the plant is utilised, resulting in zero waste. Moreover, linen is biodegradable and recyclable, minimising environmental impact.

For those seeking high-quality linen fabrics, Fabworks offers a curated collection suitable for various projects. While 100% linens are favoured for their crispness and that classic ‘linen look’, linen-cotton blends have the benefits of both fibres, offering the durability
of linen teamed with the softness and gentle handle & drape of cotton. Both these compositions are perfect for creating comfortable and stylish summer garments.

Incorporating linen into your spring and summer sewing projects not only enhances your wardrobe with breathable and durable pieces but also supports sustainable practices, making it a choice that benefits both you and the environment.
