Colour:

Tan boasts a seriously classic, rich golden brown hue. Think antique tan leather, polished walnut furniture and the warm reassurance of this autumnal hue. This mellow classic is very traditional, especially for wool fabrics of this weight, imagine the classic full-length camel coat, whether you choose tan, camel, caramel or beige, these classic hues are the epitome of chic and suave style for overcoats. Interpret this self-assured classic coloured fabric how you choose and create timeless pieces of your own.

Properties:

This Italian-manufactured quality all-wool fabric is a hard-wearing, heavyweight yet comforting and soft woollen fabric. This closely woven, jumbo herringbone (6cm wide) is felted to give it a dense, lightly brushed quality and is less prone to fraying.

Double-faced, seriously weighty creation that is closely woven in the finest soft lambswool yarns to produce a dense 3mm thick, double-faced fabric where the main feature the textured jumbo herringbone sits proudly on the face side and an obscured, softly brushed and felted version forms the reverse, very much like duffle coat fabric.

Boasting a super sturdy and stable handle, this all-wool fabric has a surprisingly soft wool feel and a very heavy but soft drape quality. The characteristic chevrons of the herringbone weave are still apparent in this densely felted fabric. You can see the craftsmanship shining through!

Garment Suggestions:

Create the cosiest and certainly smartest overcoats from this fabric or take the style down a peg and create your favourite winter jacket or classic duffle coat. Add some leather to attach the toggles and cord.

Hard-wearing field coats and jackets (with lots of useful pockets) made up in Tan will team up perfectly with natural accented country tweeds.

This heavy fabric is also ideal for worker/donkey jacket styles with leather or waxed fabric yokes. Team your garments up with weathered green leather / wax fabric for a superb combination. Utility-style Shackets are another excellent choice to make, these unlined coats/jackets are a satisfying make and you don't have to neaten the seams thanks to the properties of minimal fraying! Use top-stitching to add detail and strength to seams, and chunky buttons and you have the perfect throw-on smart/casual garment for winter.

Historical costume makers and reenactors; this traditional woollen fabric is perfect for a profusion of hard-wearing costumes!

Other Uses:

If clothes making isn't your forte, use Tan for upholstery and soft furnishing projects such as seat pads, boxed cushions and footstools. You could also appliqué with rustic country tweeds and leathers for a traditional gentlemen's club vibe!

Why choose wool fabric?

Benefits of sewing with Wool! 🐑

We love wonderful wool! Why? Because it looks beautiful, well yes but did you know wool has a series of superpowers that make it the most incredible natural fibre, suitable for more garment suggestions and sewing inspiration than possibly any other?

Wool has a unique naturally crimped 3D structure which attributes to some brilliant properties & makes it a great fabric to wear throughout all the seasons.

Naturally Breathable: This amazing 3D crimped structure promotes air circulation allowing air to pass through the fabric, allowing for circulation and ventilation for your skin to breathe, keeping you cool.

Shower Resistant: Sheep naturally produce a waxy substance called lanolin. As sheep live outdoors, this naturally occurring wax helps to protect sheep from the elements, naturally shedding water & keeping them dry. This same property is retained within the wool fibres when spun into yarn.

Moisture Absorbing: The moisture-retentive superpowers of wool! It’s hydrophilic core gives wool the ability to wick away moisture keeping you dry and comfortable – this possibly one of our favourite properties because you can stay fresh when wearing wool, from autumn right through to spring!
