Speckled Chestnut Herringbone - Meltham Meadow

Weave: A chunky 2cm herringbone, cut wide enough to read as a chevron from distance rather than dissolving into bland texture. This is a true woven herringbone, not a print, so the pattern goes all the way through the cloth and will not degrade, even with years of wear.

Texture: A characterful tweed surface with neps standing proud of the weave, so you can feel the speckle under a thumb as well as see it, yet still smooth enough to be comfortable and tactile. Substantial without being at all coarse.

Handle: Firm, warm and dense with a satisfying weight in the hand. At 325GSM it has substance without being difficult to machine sew, and it takes a pin and a needle cleanly.

Drape: Structured. This herringbone holds a clean fold and a sharp edge rather than falling softly, which is why it flatters tailored shapes and is not suited to garments designed to cling.

Pressing and Making: Press from the wrong side with a damp cloth and plenty of steam and it will hold a crease indefinitely, making it a rewarding cloth to tailor. Never run a hot iron directly over the face, as the surface will flatten and shine and the neps will lose their lift; use a pressing cloth every time. Curved seams and lapel rolls need a tailor's ham rather than a flat board. Chalk disappears into the texture, so thread-mark or use tailor's tacks for anything critical. Cut in one direction with the chevron running the way you want it read and match the herringbone across centre-front and side seams (remembering the seam allowance) while you are cutting rather than ‘guessing’ when at the machine. Like every woven wool the cut edge frays, so overlock, bind or Hong Kong finish your seams as you go. A size 90 universal or a denim needle and a slightly longer stitch will handle the density without pulling.

How Wool Wears: Wool of this construction improves rather than degrades. The surface softens with wear, the neps settle in, and the herringbone becomes more legible as the cloth relaxes. Wool has natural crease recovery, so most creasing drops out overnight on a hanger in a steamy bathroom without any pressing at all. Brush along the twill with a soft clothes brush rather than washing, and dry clean only when it genuinely needs it, as every clean takes a little of the natural oil out. Store folded or hung with air around it and away from prolonged direct light. Treated this way, your self-bespoke garment will last for decades and transcend fashion ‘fads’, and still be good for upcycling by another generation.
