Introduction:

Fir Tree Jumbo - Herringbone Wool Coating is a truly hard-wearing, heavyweight yet soft woollen fabric. This closely woven, jumbo herringbone is felted to give it a dense, lightly brushed quality that is less prone to fraying.

Colour:

Fir Tree Jumbo this double-faced, seriously weighty creation is closely woven in rich deep evergreen yarns to produce a dense 3mm thick, double-faced fabric where the main feature the textured jumbo herringbone sits proudly on the face side and a close flat weave forms the reverse, very much like duffle coat fabric.

Garment Suggestions:

Fir Tree Jumbo is supremely warm and will mix and match perfectly with wool tweeds and other blue-green toned country clothing and outdoor fabrics.

Boasting a super sturdy and stable handle, this all-wool fabric has a sturdy, but surprisingly soft wool feel and a very heavy but soft drape quality. The characteristic chevrons of the herringbone weave are still apparent in this densely felted fabric and the fine wool fibres produce a subtle sheen. You can see the craftsmanship shining through! Hard-wearing field coats and jackets made up in Fir Tree Jumbo will team up perfectly with country tweeds. Traditional Duffel-style coats are of course the perfect garment to make from this sturdy fabric. Add some green or tan leather for attaching the toggles and cord.

This heavy fabric is also ideal for worker/donkey jacket styles with leather or waxed fabric yokes. Team your garments up with weathered green leather/ wax fabric for a superb combination. Utility style Shackets (or shirt/jackets) are another excellent choice to make, these unlined coats/jackets are a satisfying make and you don't have to neaten the seams thanks to the properties of minimal fraying! Use top-stitching to add detail and strength to seams, chunky buttons and you have the perfect throw-on smart/casual garment for winter.

Historical costume makers and reenactors; this ocean-toned fabric is perfect for a profusion of hard-wearing costumes!

Other Uses:

If clothes making isn't your forte, use Fir Tree Jumbo  for upholstery and soft furnishing projects such as seat pads, boxed cushions and footstools. You could also appliqué with rustic country tweeds and leathers for a very rural/gentlemen's club vibe!

Why choose wool fabric?

Benefits of sewing with Wool! 🐑

We love wonderful wool! Why? Because it looks beautiful, well yes but did you know wool has a series of superpowers that make it the most incredible natural fibre, suitable for more garment suggestions and sewing inspiration than possibly any other?

Wool has a unique naturally crimped 3D structure which attributes to some brilliant properties & makes it a great fabric to wear throughout all the seasons.

Naturally Breathable: This amazing 3D crimped structure promotes air circulation allowing air to pass through the fabric, allowing for circulation and ventilation for your skin to breathe, keeping you cool.

Shower Resistant: Sheep naturally produce a waxy substance called lanolin. As sheep live outdoors, this naturally occurring wax helps to protect sheep from the elements, naturally shedding water & keeping them dry. This same property is retained within the wool fibres when spun into yarn.

Moisture Absorbing: The moisture-retentive superpowers of wool! It’s hydrophilic core gives wool the ability to wick away moisture keeping you dry and comfortable – this possibly one of our favourite properties because you can stay fresh when wearing wool, from autumn right through to spring!
