Colour Blocking Fabrics

Colour blocking is a fantastic way of showcasing fabric, colour and skill, sewing with multiple panels of similar fabrics to create a completely wild and wonderful garment, take inspiration from our colour blocking queen and resident fabric expert: Dawn!

How to Colour Block your fabrics

The key to successful colour blocking is choosing fabrics of a similar weight, ideally the same, so that your garment hangs evenly and seams sit smoothly. Mixing fabrics that are too different in weight can throw off the balance, making construction tricky and the final look less polished.

At Fabworks, we’re big believers in the power of colour, which is why we stock a wide range of palettes across many fabric types and weights. From lighter options perfect for spring and summer projects to cosy, heavier choices for autumn and winter, you’ll find endless possibilities to experiment with bold, creative combinations. Whether you’re planning tailored outerwear, statement dresses, or soft furnishings, there’s a colour story (and a fabric weight) to suit every season.

What’s more, some of these fabrics aren’t just for interiors – they’re also suitable for clothing. Our luxurious Melton's, for example, are perfect for crafting bold, colour-blocked outerwear that’s as stylish as it is timeless.

Stretch Fabrics

Why not have a go at colour blocking with jersey fabrics? The key is to avoid stretching the fabrics as you sew, otherwise your seams can end up a little uneven. If you’re feeling adventurous, explore our collection and see what creative combinations you can come up with!
