Pumpkin Dress Crepe

September is here, which means the leaves are changing colour and so are the fashion trends. Autumn is well on the way.

Throughout September we are featuring the Pumpkin Dress Crepe, our latest Fabric of The Month - a superb autumnal coloured woven 100% viscose (that means it's not stretchy). This breathable, drapey, and light/medium weight classic dress crepe is ideal for feminine styles that will drape and fall away from the body with sophisticated elegance.

These fabulous woven fabrics are soft, floaty and drapey. Crepes usually have a slightly textured finish and feel, due to the crinkled yarn used in their construction. Ideal for floaty feminine sophisticated styles, smart occasion wear and wardrobe staples.

Fabworks' Fabric of The Month is now reduced until Monday 1st October.

Was: £7.00
NOW: £4.50 per metre - click here to buy

Richly coloured and ideal for cross seasonal garments, this is a key trend for A/W. A great autumnal colour that will always be fabulous on its own, but will work really well when colour blocked with blue tones too, particularly navy and cobalt. More gentle colour palettes will give a coordinated and sophisticated chic look, such as camel beige, rose gold and peachy nude tones.

Our talented seamsters at Fabworks tried the Pumpkin Dress Crepe for themselves, from washing right through to garment production. Dawn, our fabric specialist and expert description writer for Fabworks Online has conjured up fantastic results using this viscose fabric (pictures above). For some ideas and inspiration, read on and take a look at how to create this look for yourself.

Once home with the 4 metres of Pumpkin Dress Crepe, Dawn overlocked the raw edges to stop it from fraying in the wash. If you don’t have an overlocker you can just use pinking shears or zig -zag the edges. She then put the piece (open/unfolded) into the washing machine and laundered at 30 degrees on a medium mixed wash cycle.

The fabric was line dried, drying quickly with little creasing. Husband on pegging out duty - can you tell?

Next the fabric was measured and appeared to have only shrunk slightly (as is expected for viscose)

Ironing beautifully, the Pumpkin Dress Crepe was then ready for pattern cutting. When ironed the crimped yarns (that create the crepe finish) relaxed. Any slight shrinkage appears to have been remedied

Dawn chose two patterns to showcase the beautiful breathable drape quality. One from the VERY EASY VOGUE pattern collection: V9311, altering where necessary to her own requirements

Woven crepe fabrics can move around, so plenty of pins and pattern weights are useful, so that you can cut accurately for professional results

The other pattern: The Palazzo Trousers (Simple Sew). A super easy pattern that can be shortened to create different length culottes to suit your style and height

Dawn chose to close up the plunging neckline by 6cms and added cover buttons. The '70s look starts to come together!

Dawn wanted to create a '70s inspired dress that came to just below the knee, but without the lower frill that you can see in View A (pattern on right) Once cut out the pieces went together well and you can make the culottes quite easily in an afternoon. The only parts you should take your time with are the invisible zipper and the waistband

After making a fabric tie (intended for the back waist) she decided to add this to the neckline to create a pussy bow, which gives the dress a more autumnal style that you can wear with thick tights come winter. Did you notice the smart cover buttons? If you fancy adding some extra detail, try it for yourself. It'll finish the look and match your garment perfectly!

Both the culottes (which we don't have photos of as yet, sorry!) and dress are super comfortable and also wash and wear really well. We think the Pumpkin Dress Crepe is so versatile that you will want to make so many more garments with it. All will look stunning sporting nature's autumnal palette.

Take the plunge and try this viscose crepe for yourself. A staple fabric that you can wear as a dark palette throughout A/W, or brighten up with lighter and cooler tones in S/S!
