Composition: 100% Wool

Colour:

Classic, true emerald/grass green, said to replicate the green grass that Billiards was historically played upon. This locally woven all wool baize is the real deal!

Properties:

Classic Green Wool Baize is a closely woven and finished fabric that has a cosy brushed surface and produces a soft handle. Made from 100% wool, our first-rate wool baize is stable both width and lengthways and boasts a firm medium to heavyweight hand.

Uses:

This lustrous, smooth, hardwearing dense fabric is traditionally used to cover snooker and billiards tables, card tables, antique writing slopes and desk inlays.

Classic Green Wool Baize has a myriad of household uses from lining precious jewellery boxes, and cutlery drawers, to creating bases for heavy ornaments and trophies. It can also be used for upholstery. In grand historic houses, green baize covered the door between the family and servant quarters; the strong, densely woven fabric helped to deaden noise.

Garment Suggestions:

Baize and Melton fabrics are versatile, woven and then felted, with hardly any fraying to the cut edges and mainly have the same appearance on both sides. These fabrics are traditionally used for coats, jackets, waistcoats and many historical and costume/cosplay applications as well as capes and stylish wraps.

Other Uses:

Baize and Meltons make an ideal base for 2D needle-felted projects which can be made into bags, cushions wall hangings, etc. Why not personalise yours with a little needle felting or applique - team with your offcuts of Yorkshire Tweed fabrics for a wonderful combination.

Why choose wool fabric?

Benefits of sewing with Wool! 🐑

We love wonderful wool! Why? Because it looks beautiful, well yes but did you know wool has a series of superpowers that make it the most incredible natural fibre, suitable for more garment suggestions and sewing inspiration than possibly any other?

Wool has a unique naturally crimped 3D structure which attributes to some brilliant properties & makes it a great fabric to wear throughout all the seasons.

Naturally Breathable: This amazing 3D crimped structure promotes air circulation allowing air to pass through the fabric, allowing for circulation and ventilation for your skin to breathe, keeping you cool.

Shower Resistant: Sheep naturally produce a waxy substance called lanolin. As sheep live outdoors, this naturally occurring wax helps to protect sheep from the elements, naturally shedding water & keeping them dry. This same property is retained within the wool fibres when spun into yarn.

Moisture Absorbing: The moisture-retentive superpowers of wool! It’s hydrophilic core gives wool the ability to wick away moisture keeping you dry and comfortable – this possibly one of our favourite properties because you can stay fresh when wearing wool, from autumn right through to spring!
