Perfectly Imperfect Notice:
This cloth was saved from a West Yorkshire woollen manufacturer, where it would otherwise have been destroyed. Rescuing good cloth from waste is what Fabworks is for. The dye on this piece bleeds and will transfer onto hands while the cloth is being handled. It may also mark pale linings, light shirting and upholstery. Wash testing before use is essential, and we would recommend a fully lined garment and care when pairing with pale fabrics. It is offered at a reduced price for this reason. We strongly advise ordering a sample, or a 0.5m Cut Length, to inspect the cloth in detail before committing to a project. View the other photographs to see the fabric closely and know exactly what you are buying.
Colour:
Classic black for all the right reasons: chic, stylish, timeless, goes with everything, and paired with other simply chic tones it has a certain air of sophistication beloved by generations.
Properties:
This timeless, classic black, virgin wool suiting is woven in a superfine twill weave, almost so fine the classic diagonals are hard to detect. The smooth and lustrous black yarns gleam with the sheen of a finely groomed pedigree specimen and almost look like a sateen weave. Fine yarns do not mean flimsy, quite the contrary. Noble Black has the hand of a light to medium blazer weight cloth, and the close weave produces a strong and stable fabric with a deliciously soft and malleable, yet reassuringly weighty drape quality which displays the lustrous sheen when presented to the light.
Garment Suggestions:
Utilise all these admirable qualities by constructing garments with structure and drape combined. Imagine the drama one can create from a versatile and classic cloth.
An Amelia Skirt will become an indispensable key piece within your wardrobe when fashioned in this hard wearing fabric. Add a matching Jemima Waistcoat for a seriously snappy style, and a blazer that will go with everything. Find all three in our sewing patterns for midweight wools, alongside The Pattern Stash, our own pattern range.
Emphasise the heavy drape by creating equestrian style full skirted and fitted bodice Victorian coats, and lots of other fit and flare styles from classic dresses to fitted wiggle skirts with flirty peplums and swishy godets.
A fully lined garment is advisable here. Choose from our Jewel jacquard lining collection, keeping to darker shades.
Other Uses:
Create seriously smart baker boy caps, flat caps and other timeless accessories from this finest virgin wool twill.
Benefits of sewing with Wool! 🐑
We love wonderful wool! Why? Because it looks beautiful, well yes but did you know wool has a series of superpowers that make it the most incredible natural fibre, suitable for more garment suggestions and sewing inspiration than possibly any other?
Wool has a unique naturally crimped 3D structure which attributes to some brilliant properties & makes it a great fabric to wear throughout all the seasons.
Naturally Breathable: This amazing 3D crimped structure promotes air circulation allowing air to pass through the fabric, allowing for circulation and ventilation for your skin to breathe, keeping you cool.
Shower Resistant: Sheep naturally produce a waxy substance called lanolin. As sheep live outdoors, this naturally occurring wax helps to protect sheep from the elements, naturally shedding water & keeping them dry. This same property is retained within the wool fibres when spun into yarn.
Moisture Absorbing: The moisture-retentive superpowers of wool! It’s hydrophilic core gives wool the ability to wick away moisture keeping you dry and comfortable – this possibly one of our favourite properties because you can stay fresh when wearing wool, from autumn right through to spring!
