Introduction:

Tawny is a super-smart wool suiting fabric has a wonderful earthy, natural style, created by the use of two yarns which produce the amazing tawny hue.

Colour:

Tawny is rich nut brown, superfine combed and lustrous yarns are woven through fine straw-coloured yarns on the warp. Subtle slubs within the yarn produce light textural interest creating a similar look and style to linen and an overall tawny brown effect akin to wise Tawny owls.

Properties:

Tawny feels subtly textured with a very lightly brushed wool feel too, this very classic wool meets linen-look fabric is the epitome of country style for the city gent or lady.  A closely woven construction makes for a stable hand, soft but resilient drape quality which will behave much like quality linen and worsted.

This first-rate fabric will produce sharp tailored details should you require it to do so and will press perfectly. Wool combined with linen is naturally temperature regulating.

Care Guidance for 100% Linen: if you prefer your linen with fewer creases, you can press the fabric with a hot iron to seal the fabric finishers – before washing! We recommend you test a sample piece first.

Garment Suggestions:

Summer blazers/suits take you easily into autumn and then later into spring. The Pattern Stash's Cordelia Trousers and Jemima Waistcoat are perfect for this superb fabric and The Blazer by The Avid Seamstress is ideal for creating your first classic blazer.

Utilise the soft drape quality of this wool and linen hybrid and create superb temperature-regulating cottage core styles with an earthy nature vibe, think natural shabby chic styles with quirky hand-embellished details incorporating up-cycled vintage lace, fabrics and pre-embroidered scraps.

Think of Tawny as linen but with extra warmth should it be required. Sew Different's Layer Up Collection provides the perfect sewing patterns to create wonderfully bespoke cottage core styles. We love the Folia Dress, Apple Picker Dress, Stella Blouson, Harvester Pants and Triple Tuck Smock.

Why choose wool fabric?

Benefits of sewing with Wool! 🐑

We love wonderful wool! Why? Because it looks beautiful, well yes but did you know wool has a series of superpowers that make it the most incredible natural fibre, suitable for more garment suggestions and sewing inspiration than possibly any other?

Wool has a unique naturally crimped 3D structure which attributes to some brilliant properties & makes it a great fabric to wear throughout all the seasons.

Naturally Breathable: This amazing 3D crimped structure promotes air circulation allowing air to pass through the fabric, allowing for circulation and ventilation for your skin to breathe, keeping you cool.

Shower Resistant: Sheep naturally produce a waxy substance called lanolin. As sheep live outdoors, this naturally occurring wax helps to protect sheep from the elements, naturally shedding water & keeping them dry. This same property is retained within the wool fibres when spun into yarn.

Moisture Absorbing: The moisture-retentive superpowers of wool! It’s hydrophilic core gives wool the ability to wick away moisture keeping you dry and comfortable – this possibly one of our favourite properties because you can stay fresh when wearing wool, from autumn right through to spring!
