Specifications:

Manufactured in Europe

Weight: Light

GSM: 110

Composition: 100% Linen

Width: 154cm / 60.6inch

Colour:

Indigo is a first-rate, traditional open weave, all linen fabric with a light and airy artisanal style. As its name suggests the face of this natural white linen is printed with a deep and traditional indigo hue.

Properties:

Made in Europe by a company of world renown, with centuries of expertise and tradition. Linen such as this has been used for centuries because of its beneficial properties; cool and breathable, gets softer with washing and wear, is impervious to moths and resists dirt and stains.

Linen will not form lint or pill and can be washed at high temperatures with only moderate shrinkage. The characteristic slubs (viewed as a fault once upon a time) are now part of the aesthetic appeal of a quality linen fabric.

Printed Indigo is woven from fine natural white linen yarns (then overprinted) to produce a homespun natural-style fabric with a lightly textured, crisp yet airy hand that is stable width and lengthwise, movement across the bias (due to the open weave being very much like linen scrim), due to this we do not recommend usage for structured garments. This fabric will soften with washing and handling.

The natural slub quality of the yarn and the traditional weave give this fabric a very distinctive cross-hatched look with a carefree relaxed style, perfect for a host of sewing room projects. All you have to do is decide what to make.

Garment Suggestions:

The airy drape quality is ideal for loose over tunics, oversized shirts and layering pieces. Explore Lagenlook designs from Boho Banjo and the fashion aesthetic of Gudrun Sjoden.

Choose pieces that you can layer with other breathable fabrics. The open weave makes the fabric translucent so is best layered to create a superb, summer chic layered-linen look. Create oversized shirts, coatigan-style jackets, and boat-necked boxy tops, perfect for layering over simple camisoles/slips.

A-line tunics with shark-bite hems, and prairie/buffet dresses like The Wildergown - Friday Pattern Co look fabulous made in sheer fabrics. Just create a simple underdress to sit beneath. These loose and romantic style dresses are ideal for putting on over your swimwear on the beach or poolside too.

Other Uses:

Create romantic light and airy window dressings for the home; long flowing country style French window curtains- neat Scandinavian blinds and cute cafe curtains. Incorporate into textile art-like pieces and mix with embroidery, weaving and lace appliqué.

About Linen

Linen not only offers ‘cool chic’ looks, but also comfort, durability, and sustainability, and is an exceptional fabric to wear throughout spring and summer months. It comes in weights from super light and floaty, through ‘shirt crisp’ to softly draping skirt and trouser weight, which can even find a place in the seasonal transition wardrobe. Derived from the flax plant, linen is celebrated for its breathability and moisture-wicking properties, ensuring you stay cool and dry during warmer months. Its natural fibres allow for excellent air circulation, making garments feel light and comfortable even on the hottest days.

One of the standout features of linen is its durability. The fabric's inherent strength resists abrasion and pilling, ensuring that your garments maintain their beauty over time. Additionally, linen will soften with each wash, enhancing comfort without compromising its robust nature. This makes linen ideal for creating timeless wardrobe staples, such as trousers, tunics, shirts and dresses.

Linen's hypoallergenic and antibacterial qualities make it suitable for individuals with sensitive skin or allergies. Its natural resistance to bacteria ensures garments remain fresh.

From an environmental perspective, linen is a sustainable choice. Flax cultivation requires minimal water and pesticides, and every part of the plant is utilised, resulting in zero waste. Moreover, linen is biodegradable and recyclable, minimising environmental impact.

For those seeking high-quality linen fabrics, Fabworks offers a curated collection suitable for various projects. While 100% linens are favoured for their crispness and that classic ‘linen look’, linen-cotton blends have the benefits of both fibres, offering the durability
of linen teamed with the softness and gentle handle & drape of cotton. Both these compositions are perfect for creating comfortable and stylish summer garments.

Incorporating linen into your spring and summer sewing projects not only enhances your wardrobe with breathable and durable pieces but also supports sustainable practices, making it a choice that benefits both you and the environment.
