Introducing Thistledown Marl:
Thistledown Marl, is the second collection of fabrics from our Fabworks’ exclusive Heart of Huddersfield bespoke wool fabric range. A gorgeous, semi-solid, bespoke woollen fabric made up ‘ere int’ mills by Yorkshire folk!
With its name taken from the soft fluffy seed heads of thistles, Thistledown Marl has an almost feathery appearance; featuring a lightly textured and fluffy handle that is not at all dense or stiff. Thistledown Marl is like a demi-bouclé. The fabric itself has a flat weave, woven using a combination of fine multi-tonal yarns; of light and dark grey on both the warp and weft. This creates a subtle yet noticeable grey marled undertone. The weft has an additional bouclé yarn, adding characteristic curls to both the face and reverse sides and helping to create a lovely brushed and tufted feel. These tiny tufts and slubs are not the sort to catch and pull, either. Pretty and still practical!
Designed to coordinate and complement previous Heart of Huddersfield wools, Thistledown Marl also uses a marled yarn (just like 2019’s HOH: Herringbones, Marled Meltons & Birdseyes) giving unique subtle marl detailing for a quirky and bespoke look. When it comes to sewing, there are a whole host of fabulous suggestions for teaming Thistledown Marl with other coordinating HoH wools. See our Thistledown Marl Overview page for all the info!

Colour:
With the focus on the hues of Runny Honey itself: this fabric full of golden sunshine; rich and warming, fluffy and happy like busy honeybees, comforting like a spoonful of runny honey, and wholesome too! This delightful and textured woollen evokes instant feel good vibes with its uplifting mellow yellow tones, the subtle marled details add extra interest, reminiscent of dark centred sunflowers and the stripes on busy bees.
Coordinating Combinations:
Runny Honey is ideal for adding a pop of colour to your A/W wardrobe and will contrast beautifully with Buddleia Purple for a fabulous pansy palette. Sit it alongside Demoiselle Teal for a divine contrast or create autumnal bliss when teaming with Mother’s Marmalade and Field Poppy. Tone down Runny Honey by teaming it with Nature’s Best.
Properties:
A reassuring and cosy medium-heavy drape quality makes this woollen ideal for a wardrobe full of practical garments. Thistledown Marl is a closely woven, mediumweight, all wool fabric and of course, it has a super stable handle with a natural ease across the bias. Use for unstructured styles such as cardis & coatigans, unlined capes, and loose pullovers. If you are on the hunt for a semi structured number peruse the jacket, waistcoat, coat, skirt, and dress pattern recommendations, and for some very selfish sewing there is even a special handbag pattern stocked & supplied by Fabworks, as well as plenty of other accessory recommendations too. Is it too early to start making Christmas presents yet?
