Introduction:

This substantial melton wool fabric was created by closely weaving 100% wool yarns on both the warp and weft. The fabric is then fulled, just one of the processes used in creating melton to give that dense felt-like finish.

Colour:

Pit Black - Wool Melton is a superb, classic black, as dark as its namesake. Classic Melton in classic black is a go-to for overcoats and so much more. This is a seriously hard-wearing woollen fabric a  go-to for all manner of clothing and more...

Properties:

This closely woven, dense felted fabric has a firm lightly brushed surface that produces a seriously hard-wearing and cosy handle. Made from 100% wool, our first-rate Pit Black is stable both width and lengthways and boasts a heavyweight handle too. this is the sort of felted wool fabric which will protect against sharp thorns and industrial wear and tear. Often used in the protective clothing industry for jackets and trousers.

Garment Suggestions:

Meltons are versatile felted fabrics with hardly any fraying to the cut edges and have the same appearance on both sides. The fabric is traditionally used for coats, jackets, waistcoats and many historical and costume applications as well as capes and accessories.

Other Uses:

Meltons also make an ideal base for 2-D needle-felted projects, which can be made into bags, cushions, wall hangings, etc. Pit Black is also ideal for blankets & throws too! Why not personalise yours with colourful needle felting or applique for a folk style or team with your offcuts of Yorkshire Tweed fabrics for a wonderful combination? This hard-wearing woollen will make the sturdiest footstools and upholstered pieces.

Bed service, order not received

Order still has not arrived. I requested if a video of the fabric could be sent to me, but they told me to order a sample. I explained that I’m only looking to buy 1 fabric only and that it doesn’t seem financially sound to pay the money for the shipping and the taxes just for a sample (I live outside the UK). I got no response, and I took a chance and ordered it anyway. It has been over 14 days and my order still has not arrived.

Overall I’m disappointed with their service. I was delighted to find a website with so many sustainable fabrics but the lengthy delivery time and the lack of customer service is just not worth it.

Fantastic

Delighted with the quality of this Melton wool fabric. I’m using it to make a Mexican Tourist Jacket. Although it is a thicker type felt, it is still possible to embroider on to it. Hangs beautifully.

Why choose wool fabric?

Benefits of sewing with Wool! 🐑

We love wonderful wool! Why? Because it looks beautiful, well yes but did you know wool has a series of superpowers that make it the most incredible natural fibre, suitable for more garment suggestions and sewing inspiration than possibly any other?

Wool has a unique naturally crimped 3D structure which attributes to some brilliant properties & makes it a great fabric to wear throughout all the seasons.

Naturally Breathable: This amazing 3D crimped structure promotes air circulation allowing air to pass through the fabric, allowing for circulation and ventilation for your skin to breathe, keeping you cool.

Shower Resistant: Sheep naturally produce a waxy substance called lanolin. As sheep live outdoors, this naturally occurring wax helps to protect sheep from the elements, naturally shedding water & keeping them dry. This same property is retained within the wool fibres when spun into yarn.

Moisture Absorbing: The moisture-retentive superpowers of wool! It’s hydrophilic core gives wool the ability to wick away moisture keeping you dry and comfortable – this possibly one of our favourite properties because you can stay fresh when wearing wool, from autumn right through to spring!
