Introduction:

Fallen Ashes - Crepe Feel Wool Suiting is suitable for a wide range of seriously smart or smart/casual clothing depending on the patterns and styles you choose to create and has a designer pedigree. Originally made by Italian craftsmen for the same designer as our SOS Collection, it is equally stunning and perfect for cross-seasonal wear throughout the year - after all, wool is naturally temperature-regulating!

Colour:

Versatile multi-tones of ash grey are predominant throughout this first-rate Italian woven 100% fine wool with a lightly creped feel. The combination of mid-grey soft silky yarns across the warp produces the ash-like multi-tonal effect when combined with two paler-toned lightly crimpled yarns to produce a classic finely textured and closely woven grey suiting fabric.

Properties:

Fallen Ashes has a stable handle and delicious drape that will help you to maintain an air of relaxed sophistication thanks to its crease-resistant characteristics.

Garment Suggestions:

This classic woollen fabric shouldn’t only be consigned to a gentlemen’s wardrobe, it has a wonderful soft drape quality that is also perfect for ladies’ clothing. It's a great all-rounder to put to use for a host of sewing projects.

Tailors, rejoice: this is a tailoring classic - perfect for jackets, trousers and waistcoats.  Update this classic and create sports luxe styles such as bomber and Harrington style jackets with gleaming zips and stud details, or cosy utility-style over-shirts, or blouson jackets with a retro vibe.

For something a little sharper; create classic wide-legged trousers The Pattern Stash - Cordelia Trousers and matching waistcoats Jemima Waistcoat for confident feminine style. Dress this look down with classic Fair Isle jumpers and a pair of brogues. For full-on feminine glamour go the whole hog and create a matching blazer with a velvet collar and pocket flaps, classic cuts never date.

For feminine styles Fallen Ashes is ideal for most skirt styles, pinafore dresses, shift dresses and dresses which require a good drape quality. Merchant and Mills - The Trapeze & The Rugby are superb dress patterns that will look and feel fabulous made in this divine wool flannel (excellent for layering with roll-neck sweaters).

Team your Fallen Ashes makes with one of our SOS Collectionfabrics, they're perfect for lining your jackets and skirts as well as for statement waistcoat backs.

Lovely fabric, lighter colour than expected

The fabric is beautifully light, with fab handle and a lovely drape. I've cut out my trousers and it was great to work with. Still have to sew them but I have a feeling it will sew up beautifully. The colour is lighter than expected and lighter than shown in the photos. I wouldn't call it a charcoal, more of a mid grey, but still a lovely shade.

Why choose wool fabric?

Benefits of sewing with Wool! 🐑

We love wonderful wool! Why? Because it looks beautiful, well yes but did you know wool has a series of superpowers that make it the most incredible natural fibre, suitable for more garment suggestions and sewing inspiration than possibly any other?

Wool has a unique naturally crimped 3D structure which attributes to some brilliant properties & makes it a great fabric to wear throughout all the seasons.

Naturally Breathable: This amazing 3D crimped structure promotes air circulation allowing air to pass through the fabric, allowing for circulation and ventilation for your skin to breathe, keeping you cool.

Shower Resistant: Sheep naturally produce a waxy substance called lanolin. As sheep live outdoors, this naturally occurring wax helps to protect sheep from the elements, naturally shedding water & keeping them dry. This same property is retained within the wool fibres when spun into yarn.

Moisture Absorbing: The moisture-retentive superpowers of wool! It’s hydrophilic core gives wool the ability to wick away moisture keeping you dry and comfortable – this possibly one of our favourite properties because you can stay fresh when wearing wool, from autumn right through to spring!
