A Note on ‘Gas Fume Fading’

Deadstock fabric by its nature, does not come to Fabworks straight off the weaving loom, and usually, but not always, we know the previous storage conditions. Whilst Fabworks buys high quality fabrics (mostly commissioned by high end designers and fashion brands), often there is no exact date of manufacture nor proof of the temperature and light conditions at which it was stored.

From time to time, some natural fibre fabrics—particularly those in delicate lighter shades—may experience a rare phenomenon known as ‘gas fume fading’. This is a rare reaction of certain dyes in natural fibre textiles when exposed to the air, and results in a subtle discolouration over time. It should be noted that this does not affect the quality or longevity of the fabric. The pieces affected show a faint faded line down the length of the fabric, where it has been folded to half width—a gentle reminder of its journey before reaching you. This is an uncommon occurrence, but one we feel is worth mentioning, as part of our commitment to transparency and care. We recommend ordering extra fabric to allow for this imperfection – note that the width of the fabric is the true width, not accounting for the faint fading down the middle of the length.

Colour:

Jersey Cream is woven with 100% natural wool yarns, the colour of all things pure and natural. Think fresh Jersey cream with warm undertones and rich, good-for-you, sun-infused indulgence. This classic cream hue has a cosy and comforting look (and feel). There's a certain, innocent, timeless style that goes with garments created in this wholesome neutral hue. Perfect teamed with most other colours and hues, but sit this with, camel, tan, and taupe hues and you're on to a winning combination.

We recommend ordering samples to compare against our other cream meltons; Cornish Cream Devon Cream

Properties:

This heavyweight and closely woven wool fabric has a  brushed, fluffy, felted, blanket-like hand that protects against the elements. Stable and extremely hard-wearing, wool melton-duffle-type fabrics naturally repel water to keep you dry and warm. With a heavy weight and accompanying drape quality, this fabric feels like a protective hug. Envelope yourself in this quality woollen! Jersey Cream is the perfect reassuringly warming, woollen fabric to beat the winter chills.

Garment Suggestions:

Traditional Duffle coats are of course the perfect garment to make from this sturdy fabric, and the blank canvas, winter-white background allows plenty of room for creative freedom, allowing one to embellish with folk style embroidery or needle felting like the Polish frock coats from around 1850, these were predecessors of the duffle coat with toggles and hood. Get creative and add ethnic embroidered trims for instant results and a unique style to be proud of.

This heavy fabric is also ideal for donkey jacket styles with leather or PU yokes. Team your garments up with aged leather, oilcloth or PU for a superb combination.

Hard-wearing shacket jackets made up of Jersey Cream will team up perfectly with country tweeds and your staple denim pieces.

Historical costume makers and reenactors, this iconic fabric is perfect for a profusion of hard-wearing costumes!

Other Uses:

If clothes-making isn't your forte, use Jersey Cream for upholstery and soft furnishing projects such as rustic seat pads, boxed cushions and footstools.

❕ ❌ 🧵 Perfectly Imperfect Fabric 🧶 ❌ ❕

Our Perfectly Imperfect fabrics are not quite perfect due to minor production errors. Most (but not all) imperfections are not very noticeable.

Imperfections for this fabric are listed within the products description above. Fabworks does not sell or produce fabrics that are hugely faulty. All are perfectly imperfect and not quite up to scratch to be sold at their original retail price.

We advise ordering samples to gauge the fabric quality and see any imperfections.
