Colour:

Silvery greys and blues in a fab herringbone weave like the twinkling of fish scales underwater, make up the sea blue colour palette of a first-rate, rectangular woven check, 100% lambswool herringbone. The characteristic charcoal grey warp reminds us of the striped scaly pattern on a mackerel's back. You can’t really ignore how sea-inspired this (and general denim-toned) fabric is.

Properties:

Herringbone woven woollens were originally manufactured for fishermen, to keep out the chills of the wind and sea, with the design inspired by the bones of herring. Let this sea themed cosy woollen keep out the chill.

The softness and warmth of this herringbone weave, along with its firm but drapey handle, make Mackerel Check a perfect candidate for your autumn/winter fancies. Larger projects are probably better suited to this woollen, due to its above average sized pattern repeat. But don't let that put you off - the colour palette is so serene and complimentary that the repeat shouldn't govern your style.

Garment Suggestions:

There are a multitude of cute clothing ideas that spring to mind when you lay your eyes on this Avoca fabric: ponchos, wraps, capes, unstructured & drapey dresses and waterfall coats are all a must! Jeans with grey suede boots will be excellent additions alongside this exceptional fabric.

If you're looking for a fantastic FREE pattern look no further than our very own Asymetric Poncho/Wrap tutorial with video demonstrations for every process and a guide for how to create the perfect A/W loose cosy style. All you need is the wool (outer) fabric + cotton (lining) fabric + thread + buttons.

Other Uses:

Interiors theme? The colours in this herringbone weave will sit perfectly in a coastal property, evoking the natural colours that we associate with the sea lapping against the rocks and the wind whispering overhead. Mackerel Check is a fool proof fabric choice for throws, cushions, bolsters and pouffes - the comforting accessories that make a house a home!

For anyone who'd love to put these great colours into a craft project, make your own scarves and match them with bags and hats. If you still have some left over, perhaps a door-stopper to match the rich plaid curtains or blinds. Suitably wonderful!

Avoca Deadstock Fabrics

Explore all Avoca surplus fabrics

Fabworks x Avoca

Fabworks’ association with Avoca began in 2011, when Fabworks Mill Shop was only a fraction of what it is today, and way before Fabworks Online existed. We were approached by Avoca with an offer to buy their surplus fabric from the previous seasons' collections. What an opportunity! A deal was struck, and what arrived at our warehouse a few weeks later was the most amazing selection of Irish-made pure wool fabrics, plus all the accessorising elements within the Avoca ladieswear collection (elaborate trimmings, gorgeous embroidered silks, lightweight satins, Liberty jerseys) and the cherry on top of the cake – Irish-made Donegal Tweed!

The working relationship between Fabworks and Avoca blossomed over the next few years and allowed Fabworks to develop its focus on high end ladies’ dressmaking fabrics and away from the lower end of the textiles market.

Four years and several thousand metres of fabric later, Fabworks took a bigger step than ever before, and collaborated with Avoca to commission its own range of Irish-made pure wool fabrics which marked the launch of Fabworks Online, November 16th 2015. This was a defining moment for Fabworks, being the very first collection of fabrics that we commissioned ourselves. With a range of herringbones in iconic Avoca colour-rich palettes, this was Fabworks’ first taste of proper manufacturing in the 21st century.
