Properties:

River Styx - Duffel Wool Coating is a truly hard-wearing and hardworking 100% wool fabric in a dangerously dark navy. This closely woven twill is felted to give it a dense and cosy brushed quality. This supremely warm classic coating will mix and match perfectly with your other winter clothing.

Garment Suggestions:

Boasting a super sturdy and stable handle, it has a traditional wool feel and a heavy drape quality. Hard-wearing overcoats, pea coats and jackets made up in River Styx will become perennial favourites. Traditional duffel coats are of course the perfect garment to make from this quality woollen. You can't go wrong with a navy coat and this is the darkest navy - as dark as the mythological River Styx itself!

A heavy fabric that is ideal for donkey jacket styles with leather yokes. Team your garments up with weathered navy or black leather for a superb combination. Historical costume makers and reenactors, this classic fabric is perfect for a profusion of hard wearing military costumes.

If clothes making isn't your forte, use River Styx - Duffel Wool Coating for upholstery and soft furnishing projects such as seat pads, boxed cushions and foot stools. You could also appliqué with rustic country tweeds and leathers for a very bespoke style.

Did you know that this thick woollen fabric takes its name from the traditional Duffel Coat, which takes its name from the town of Duffel in the province of Antwerp (Belgium) where the original Duffel fabric was made?

What I was expecting. However I could have done withbetter description of the fabric's weight. Grams psm. "Very heavy" is insufficient. My surmise was, going by price, that it wasdonkey jacket weight. Which was about right.

Why choose wool fabric?

Benefits of sewing with Wool! 🐑

We love wonderful wool! Why? Because it looks beautiful, well yes but did you know wool has a series of superpowers that make it the most incredible natural fibre, suitable for more garment suggestions and sewing inspiration than possibly any other?

Wool has a unique naturally crimped 3D structure which attributes to some brilliant properties & makes it a great fabric to wear throughout all the seasons.

Naturally Breathable: This amazing 3D crimped structure promotes air circulation allowing air to pass through the fabric, allowing for circulation and ventilation for your skin to breathe, keeping you cool.

Shower Resistant: Sheep naturally produce a waxy substance called lanolin. As sheep live outdoors, this naturally occurring wax helps to protect sheep from the elements, naturally shedding water & keeping them dry. This same property is retained within the wool fibres when spun into yarn.

Moisture Absorbing: The moisture-retentive superpowers of wool! It’s hydrophilic core gives wool the ability to wick away moisture keeping you dry and comfortable – this possibly one of our favourite properties because you can stay fresh when wearing wool, from autumn right through to spring!
